A young herring gull, wings spread against a pale blue sky with faint clouds. There are times during the year when the young gulls are hard to identify. Before they get their full adult plumage they can be quite drab. A young herring gull will be a large bird once it fledges, but brown and mottled. These birds are easily confused with the adult Glaucous gull.
The gull in this image is part way to getting adult plumage and is starting to show the classic herring gull markings.
